The City of Bunnell was especially hard hit by hurricanes in 2016 and 2017, particularly in one westside community originally developed in the 1940’s and 50’s. As the City’s Consulting Engineer, Alliant researched alternatives to address the flooding. After preparing and submitting applications on behalf of the City, Alliant and the City were awarded back-to-back REDI Grants from the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD). The focus of the resulting work was improvement upon localized, widespread flooding and improvement of stormwater runoff water quality to the impaired waterbodies downstream on Black Creek and Haw Creek.
Bound by narrow rights-of-way, the team developed solutions that involved a unique combination of shallow surficial swales on top of an exfiltration conveyance system, which increased storage capacity and alleviated constrictions in the system. This new system provides increased infiltration for average storm events, thus improving recharge for Florida’s shallow aquafer system both now and into the future. Phase 1 construction began in 2019 with Phase 2 construction completed in 2021.
