Smetana Road Re-Design

The City of Minnetonka selected Alliant to perform a feasibility study and proceed with preliminary and final design of Smetana Road. On the border of Minnetonka and Hopkins, this one-mile stretch of road includes a shared-use trail.

The two-lane rural street lacked any dedicated bicycle or pedestrian facilities and needed significant pavement rehabilitation. To create room for a trail on a corridor bounded by wetlands and residential areas, the roadway was narrowed and a detailed grading analysis was performed to avoid wetland and floodplain impacts.

The intersection of 11th Avenue and Smetana Road was redesigned to improve pedestrian crossing safety and improve transit access while maintaining space for large trucking operations nearby. Alliant also worked with Metro Transit to identify and implement bus stop improvements along the corridor. The completed trail provides residents with safe access to many miles of local and regional trails.
