Alliant recently welcomed engineering students from Johnson Aerospace and Engineering High School to spend a day at our downtown office.

After welcoming remarks from John Dillingham on the importance and impact of civil, survey, environmental, and landscape architecture careers, students participated in four activities.

“At Alliant, we’re problem solvers. We noticed the E in STEM lacked a focus on civil engineering. With a declining interest and need for talent entering our industry, we decided to do something about it. Part of that mission is engaging students like you, which is why we are so glad to have you here today!” Trailblazers, Beth Winter explained.

Students learned about designing a community in Beyond Typicals, got their hands dirty while soil texturing, created their own site layout designs, and gained insight into the life cycle of a roadway project, starting with planning, engagement, and traffic analysis.

After learning about areas of our industry, Molly Bethke introduced the students to the proposal process. Teams worked to create bridges while Alliant employee-owners scored them on teamwork, time management, design, and budgeting. Although the bridges looked great, not all could withstand the strength test!

Trailblazers’ events like this are a fantastic way for our employee-owners to showcase their careers and inspire the next generation of engineers.
